Twice as many solar panels and wind turbines are being built in China as in the rest of the world. The country is a leader in the field of generating sustainable energy.
Solar panels are currently being installed in China that provide 180 gigawatt hours of electricity. One gigawatt is enough to supply approximately 1 million households with electricity. Many wind turbines are also being built, totaling 159 gigawatts.
All together 339 gigawatts. That is enough to power the whole of South Korea, reports Global Energy Monitor, an American research institute in the field of energy.
Combined, China's solar and wind energy projects are double what is under construction in the world. This stark contrast shows that China is very active in renewable energy, GEM said.
And this also becomes apparent when you zoom in a little deeper into the data. Not only does China have many more plans, the country is also more decisive in their implementation. A third of the plans are currently being built. In the rest of the world, work is actually underway on 7 percent of all projects.
In total, all Chinese solar panels and wind turbines have a capacity of 758 gigawatts, if they all generate energy at full power. That is 37 percent of the country's total energy needs. Energy from coal-fired power stations currently still accounts for 39 percent. That ratio will soon be reversed, expectedly this year.
That diligence keeps the country ahead of its own solar and wind energy schedule. That goal, generating 1,200 gigawatts by 2030, may already be achieved this year. And that is useful in achieving the agreement with the United States to generate more renewable energy.
China has not signed the agreements made during the climate summit in Dubai. The most important of these: tripling renewable energy by 2030.
